PHOENIX — Applications are now open for the 2023 cycle of the Arizona Teacher Residency program.

The program, modeled after medical residencies, gives aspiring teachers a graduate education, a yearlong classroom apprenticeship and continued professional learning.

The initiative, in its second year, starts with attending a summer institute before educators move on to the apprenticeship. They become a teacher of record in their second year of the program.

Following two years, teachers will receive a master’s degree from Northern Arizona University, which supports the program along with the Arizona Department of Education.

“It is inspiring to watch our current cohort of residents develop into excellent educators,” director Victoria Theisen-Homer said in a press release.

“We are so excited about growing the program with a new and larger cohort of passionate and committed aspiring teachers.”

Interested educators can apply online and attend a virtual information session from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 16.

All U.S. citizens and permanent residents with a bachelor’s degree are eligible for the program.

In its first cycle, the program placed residents in the Osborn, Roosevelt and Tempe Elementary school districts.

“Addressing our state’s dire teacher shortage requires multiple strategies,” Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman said in the release.

“The Arizona Teacher Residency is already helping local districts fill critical positions and providing robust support for these teachers as they enter classrooms.”

We want to hear from you.
