Early-morning fire damages 20 units at west Phoenix apartment complex

PHOENIX – Crews contained an early-morning apartment fire that caused extensive damage and displaced over a dozen residents in west Phoenix on Feb. 24, authorities said.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene near 33rd Avenue and Indian School Road around 3:30 a.m., according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

They found heavy flames and smoke coming from the top floor of a three-story apartment building.

While evacuating the premises, crews extended hose lines. Additionally, ladder companies deployed to the roof for vertical ventilation.

About 20 units were affected by the blaze before it was extinguished.

About half the units were vacant, according to ABC15. The TV station also reported that the response included over 50 firefighters.

Representatives from the Red Cross and Phoenix’s Community Assistance Program were called in to help 15 displaced tenants, officials said.

No injuries were reported.

Authorities are working to determine the cause of the apartment fire.
