Major Phoenix apartment fire displaces 30 tenants, damages 20 units

PHOENIX – Crews battled a major fire that displaced more than two dozen residents at a Phoenix apartment complex on Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Smoke and flames were coming from the top floor of a three-story building when Phoenix Fire Department personnel arrived at the scene near 27th Avenue and Indian School Road, just west of Interstate 17, around 3:30 a.m.

After starting an interior attack, firefighters switched to a defensive strategy in response to a partial roof collapse.

Meanwhile, ladder trucks set up to pound the flames with water from above and get control of the incident, fire officials said.

No injuries were reported, but 20 apartments were damaged and 30 tenants were displaced.

Representatives from the Red Cross and Phoenix’s Community Assistance Program were called in to help the displaced residents.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the apartment fire.
