Phoenix apartment fire leaves 2 hospitalized, including 1 in critical condition

Two were hospitalized, including one left in critical condition, on Friday night after an apartment fire broke out in central Phoenix, authorities said.

A blaze started in the fourth level of a four-story complex located near 36th Street and Thomas Road and affected nearby units, as Phoenix Fire personnel arrived at the scene around 10:15 p.m.

One person was rescued out of the unit where the fire originated and other residents were evaluated for possible injuries, according the the Phoenix Fire Department.

The man saved from inside the apartment was taken to a nearby burn facility. Authorities said he was in critical condition as of about 1 a.m. Saturday.

The other person hospitalized from the fire was a woman, who was said to be in stable condition.

No firefighters were injured during their response.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
