Amazing Arizonans: Valley musician Young MC shares his artistic journey

PHOENIX — Marvin Young, better known as Young MC, is a Valley resident and is still making great music after a career that spans more than four decades.

On this episode of Amazing Arizonans, I talk with him about his career, which started in 1989 with his single “Bust a Move,” for which he later won a Grammy. He’s also co-written hits like “Funk Cold Medina” and “Wild Thing.”

The song’s popularity gave him the star power he needed to launch his debut album “Stone Cold Rhymin'” later that year. Since then, his music has been featured in film and television for decades.

Although he lives in the Valley now, his career has taken him all over the globe. Born in London to Jamaican immigrant parents, Young moved to Queens, New York when he was young.

That’s where he first discovered live rapping at the age of 10, which triggered his lifelong love for the art style.

Many years later, he relocated to Scottsdale in 2006. He then spent the next year creating his album “Adrenaline Flow,” which hits the airwaves in 2008.
