Men related to fatal south Phoenix shooting claim self-defense

PHOENIX — Police are investigating a shooting that left a man dead in south Phoenix on Tuesday, authorities said.

Omega McDaniels, a 21-year-old, died after being shot in the area of 1300 S. 20th Ave., according to the Phoenix Police Department.

There were reportedly two men taken into custody in relation to the shooting, who have since been released pending the results of the investigation.

Officers found McDaniels suffering from a gunshot wound around 4:38 a.m. on Tuesday.

Phoenix Fire then took McDaniels to the hospital where he died from his injuries.

Detectives identified and located two men related to the shooting during their initial investigation. They then took the men into custody.

Both men made claims of self-defense during police interviews.

After reviewing the information they had at the time, detectives released the men pending further investigation.

The case will be sent to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office once concluded.
