AHS urges owners to get pets year-round vaccinations with preventable diseases on rise

The Arizona Humane Society is urging owners to keep their pets up to date on their vaccines year-round as it sees a continuous rise in preventable diseases, including parvovirus.

AHS is on track to have another record-breaking year at its Susan & Mark Mulzet Parvo ICU with 526 puppies and adult dogs being treated for the contagious illness to date. At this time last year, 451 canines had been cared for at the facility due to parvovirus.

“A simple vaccine can prevent our pets from needless suffering and help reduce the spread of deadly viruses in our community,” Dr. Steven Hansen, AHS president and CEO, said in a news release. “These diseases do not take a season off, so we encourage pet owners to stay current on vaccines year-round. As we head into fall,  with back-to-school routines, holiday travel and boarding season approaching, it’s a good time to check your pet’s vaccine records and make sure they’re protected.”

The animal welfare organization emphasized that vaccines are essential to protect dogs from distemper and parvovirus as well as cats from feline panleukopenia.

AHS provides the vaccines for pets at its South Mountain Veterinary Clinic, Sunnyslope Veterinary Clinic and Healthy Tails Mobile Veterinary Clinic.

It noted that appointments are required for its mobile clinic, adding that its hours and dates depend on the vaccine event, location and weather conditions.
