Furry friends for free: Arizona Humane Society waives adoption fees for cats and dogs on 1 day

The Arizona Humane Society is waiving adoption fees Saturday for dogs and cats ages 1 and older to help free up shelter space for sick, injured and abused animals rescued across the Valley.

The organization has been sounding the alarm about overcrowding issues for months. AHS took in more than 25,000 cats and dogs last year. The nonprofit recorded its highest intake in more than a decade, and the total could increase to 28,000.

With limited space, and many sick, injured and abused animals needing help, AHS has around 300 pets available for adoption.

The organization hopes the event will encourage people to choose adult dogs and cats, which are often overlooked in favor of puppies and kittens.

Prospective adopters can meet pets at three locations:

• Rob & Melani Walton Papago Park Campus: 5501 E. Van Buren Street
• Nina Mason Pulliam South Mountain Campus: 1521 W. Dobbins Road
• Sunnyslope Campus: 9226 N. 13th Avenue

Adoption fees are also waived for dogs weighing 50 pounds or more at all locations through a promotion sponsored by Hill’s Pet Nutrition.

Puppies, kittens, rabbits and other small animals are available, though Saturday’s adult-pet fee waiver does not apply to them.

Veterans, seniors and first responders receive a 20% discount on adoption fees when fees apply.

Adopters can return a pet within 90 days if the placement is not a good fit.
