Arizona AG Mayes encourages taking video of interactions with ICE

PHOENIX — Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes said she is encouraging individuals to take video of any unlawful activity by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“It is absolutely lawful for you to record ICE,” Mayes told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Outspoken with Bruce & Gaydos on Thursday.

Mayes’ comments came after a Minneapolis off-duty police officer had her phone confiscated by ICE agents during a traffic stop and was told she couldn’t record the agents. The ICE officers also drew their guns on the officer.

Mayes said there is a portal, which people can use to report anything that they think is unlawful, such as assault, murder, unlawful imprisonment, false imprisonment or any other violation of a state law.

The attorney general said one of the reasons she is encouraging people to take video is so state authorities can investigate, if necessary.

“In Minneapolis, they aren’t doing investigations,” Mayes said. “The federal government. So, if I ever have to, God forbid, I don’t want to have to do any investigation of ICE. But if I do, we’re going to need independent sources of information about what happened on the streets.”

Mayes said videos from civilians would be necessary because the government would not share evidence or work together in a joint investigation.

“They apparently are not going to engage in what would be a normal joint investigation,” Mayes said.
