PHOENIX — Drivers in the Flagstaff area will want to make note of several projects that will start in the coming weeks to improve pavement along two highways.
The projects will take place along 182 miles of Interstate 40 and Interstate 17 in the Flagstaff area, the Arizona Department of Transportation announced Wednesday.
The pavement will be improved to address deterioration caused by snow and snowplowing, the large number of freeze-thaw cycles the area sees each year and heavy use by commercial vehicles, according to the department.
Crews will begin to rebuild the westbound lanes of I-40 west of Williams between mileposts 156 and 161 starting Monday. The eastbound lanes have already been addressed.
Westbound traffic on the I-40 will instead cross over the median on a temporary road and share lanes with eastbound traffic once the project begins. The lanes of travel will be separate by barriers.
This project will cost $34 million.
Crews will begin work on the second pavement-improvement project on I-40 between mileposts 179 and 162 from Parks to Cataract Lake near Williams in mid-April.
The highway will be fully reconstructed between mileposts 167 and 172. Work will first begin in the westbound lanes.
Traffic will cross over and share lanes with opposite lanes, which will again be separated by a concrete barrier, during the times of work between Garland Prairie and Pittman Valley roads.
This project will cost $35.3 million.
The third project will involve crews replacing pavement on the northbound lanes of I-17 approaching Flagstaff.
They will be working from milepost 312 to milepost 340 near the I-17/ I-40 junction.
The project will involve reconstructing the northbound lanes between mileposts 312 and 314 and replacing the bridge decks in each direction on the I-17 overpass at Willard Springs Road.
This project will cost $24.4 million.
Crews will also begin work to revamp the I-40 bridges over I-17 and Beulah Boulevard in April. Drivers should expect restrictions as a result.
This project will cost $10 million and was scheduled to be complete by the end of the year.
Crews will work from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
It was not clear when the other projects were expected to be complete. The department said the majority of the work was expected to be complete by the fall, but added additional work will continue the following spring.
Drivers were encouraged to allow extra time for travel through these areas.
