ADOT completes I-10 expansion between Tucson, Casa Grande

PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation is nearing completion on a multi-million dollar project to widen Interstate 10.

The agency announced Friday it has completed expanding I-10 to six lanes between Casa Grande and Tucson.

The most recently completed stretch was 4 miles between Eloy and Picacho, part of a a $72 million project that also includes straightening the I-10 alignment and a new interchange with State Route 87.

Crews are also working to add a first-of-its-kind dust detection and warning system as part of the project.

According to a press release, ADOT says the final portions of these projects will be completed later this year.

As of now, the 23 miles of I-10 between State Route 387 near Casa Grande and Queen Creak Road near Chandler is the only stretch between Phoenix and Tucson that only has two lanes in each direction.

ADOT said it was working with Maricopa Association of Governments and the Gila River Indian Community on a design report for that portion, but work there is still a few years away and a timeline has yet to be established.
