ADOT begins soil testing for South Mountain Freeway

Crews of the Arizona Department of Transportation will start testing Tuesday for the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway.

“We have approximately 45 bridges along the 22-mile corridor,” spokesman Dustin Krugel said. “A lot of the work will be focused around where those bridges will be.”

ADOT is testing the sturdiness of the soil, and checking groundwater levels too. If the soil is clay instead of rock, more material will be needed for sturdy bridges.

The testing will continue for several months, but Krugel said it won’t affect traffic.

The South Mountain Freeway will eventually run east and west along Pecos Road. It will then turn north between 55th and 63rd Avenues. The freeway will connect with Interstate 10 at each end.
