Bureau of Land Management seeks homes for Arizona wild horses and burros

PHOENIX — Arizonans who want to adopt wild horses or burros are in luck: wildlife authorities are hoping to find homes for the animals.

On Tuesday, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced it will hold three adoption events in Arizona next month as part of Wild Horse and Burro Awareness Week.

Those who want to take home an animal are urged to apply online prior to the trio of events through BLM’s Online Corral. However, people can also submit on-site applications.

They’ll just have to meet a few requirements:

• Be 18 years or older.
• Have approved facilities to care for the animals they buy.
• Be able to provide proper transportation home for the animals from the auction site.

All three adoption events will take place at the Florence Wild Horse and Burro Training and Off-Range Corral, which is at 17989 E. Butte Avenue.

Where do the wild horses and burros up for adoption come from?

The wild horses and burros available for adoption at the three upcoming events on Jan. 9, Jan. 23 and Jan. 30 were gathered from public lands in the western United States.

The auctions for untrained animals will start at $125 each.

However, at the Jan. 23 event, trained animals will be available. Prices for trained burros start at $500, while prices for trained horses start at $1,000.

All events run from 9 a.m. to noon.

BLM staff will load each animal into a BLM-approved trailer provided by the adopter. All animals have been vaccinated, de-wormed, examined by a veterinarian and have a current negative Coggins test.

Since the auctions will take place across from the Florence Prison complex, all visitors must adhere to the prison visitor’s policy.
