PHOENIX – The top U.S. Department Homeland Security official came to Arizona on Tuesday to get a firsthand look at operations on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Chad F. Wolf arrived in Nogales in the morning, where he planned to tour the border town’s port of entry.

It was followed by an aerial tour of the border to review wall construction.

His afternoon itinerary included a trip to Tucson to visit a Customs and Border Protection sector coordination center.

Wolf then addressed the media in Tucson in a briefing.

“The main reason for this trip was to talk to the men and women of the Border Patrol and CBP,” Wolf said. “They’re on the front lines everyday and we wanted to show support for them.”

Wolf has been filling in as head of Homeland Security since November, when he replaced acting Secretary Kevin McAleenan.

McAleenan served in the role after Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen resigned in April.

Wolf’s visit to the Southwest was set to continue Wednesday in San Diego.
