Accident halts rush-hour traffic on US 60 (Grand Avenue) in Glendale

PHOENIX – Eastbound U.S. 60 (Grand Avenue) was closed at Northern Avenue during rush hour Tuesday after an SUV ran into a power pole, Glendale police said.

The road was reopened around 8:30 p.m., according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Sgt. John Roth said two occupants were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after the accident.

On Thursday, Glendale police announced that both men died at the hospital. They were identified as 31-year-old Cesar Cervantes, who was driving, and 33-year-old Jacob Gonzales.

A press release from the department said impairment did not appear to be a factor in the accident, but vehicle speed was being investigated.

Anybody who may have witnessed the events leading up to the wreck, which occurred around 4:30 p.m., was asked to call the Glendale Police Department at 623-930-3000.

Correction: An earlier version of this story reflected an initial police report saying a semi-truck pushed the vehicle into the pole. Police later said it was a single-vehicle accident.
