AAA to see influx of Arizona motorists in need of assistance over holiday season

PHOENIX — Triple-A of Arizona is expecting to see a heavy influx of Arizona motorists in need of roadside assistance this holiday season, according to a recent press release.

The organization said it projects it will respond to more than 15,000 roadside assistance calls in Arizona over the 12-day holiday period. That would be a six percent increase from the same period last year.

Triple-A of Arizona estimated upwards of 1.4 million Arizonans will travel during this holiday season, a number that grows to 100 million for nationwide holiday travelers.

John Walter, director of fleet operations and automotive repair for AAA Arizona, said the most common service calls are predicted to relate to dead batteries, flat tires or locked vehicles.

“The increase in calls we’re projecting can in large part be attributed to the uptick in road trips, which are slated to increase more than three percent over last year,” he said in the press release. “Our team will work diligently through the holidays to get stranded motorists to and from their holiday destinations.”

In order to combat the large number of motorists in need of assistance, officials with Triple-A of Arizona said drivers should:

• Obey the state’s Move Over Law, which requires motorists to move over or slow down for vehicles displaying flashing lights while stopped alongside a freeway
• Keep their vehicle equipped with the tools necessary to help in any emergency situations, including jumper cables, flares and a non-perishable food items
• Be aware of your location at all times with the help of landmarks, mile markers and other distinguishable surroundings

Here is one aspect that is sure to spread some holiday cheer: Arizona Department of Transportation officials said drivers heading across the Valley will not encounter any freeway closures for construction over the holiday weekend.
