A little snow falls in Arizona but more is coming

PHOENIX — The Valley got thunderstorms and rain early Thursday morning while other parts of Arizona welcomed a little snow.

Carl Cerniglia with the National Weather Service said winter has arrived early in some locations.

AM sounding has the freezing lvl near 10,500 ft meaning snow is possible as low as 9,000 ft in heavier showers. Will be lower tonight. #azwx

“We’ve had a dusting on the higher peaks,” he said, listing Mount Graham near Safford and Mount Lemmon near Tucson as receiving some light snow.

“We should end up with several inches above 8,500 feet.”

The weather bureau was predicting 2-5 inches of snow in the White Mountains, with higher elevations such as Big Lake (about 9,000 feet) getting 4-8 inches of snow.

Arizona Snowbowl near Flagstaff could get 8 inches of snow.

Cerniglia said an even colder system was coming next week with more snow expected.

Meanwhile in the Valley, the showers will continue off and on through Thursday evening.
