80-year-old man killed after lunging at Pinal County deputies with scissors

PHOENIX — Pinal County sheriff’s deputies fatally shot a man after responding to reported domestic violence at a San Tan Valley home early Wednesday, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Authorities said they found Efren Gomez, 80, actively stabbing himself in his residence. The sheriff’s office said deputies shot him after he lunged at them with the scissors.

Gomez’s 74-year-old wife was hospitalized with unspecified injuries not considered life-threatening.
