PHOENIX — A 78-year-old man is dead after he was hit by a car in Peoria on Tuesday morning, authorities said.

According to the Peoria Police Department, officers and the Peoria Fire-Medical Department responded to a call for a single-vehicle collision with injuries near Bent Tree Drive and 125th Avenue around 10:30 a.m.

The passenger, identified as Arnold Anderson, walked to the back of the vehicle and was talking to a neighbor when the driver leaned back inside to turn the car off since it was still running.

Police said that moments later, the car began to roll backward down the driveway and hit both Anderson and the neighbor.

Anderson sustained significant injuries as the car rolled onto him and pinned him underneath, according to police. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The neighbor had minor injuries but was not taken to a hospital for them.

The unnamed driver was not injured. They stayed at the residence and cooperated with investigators, according to police.

The investigation into the fatal Peoria incident is ongoing.
