PHOENIX – Five people escaped a burning fast-food restaurant without injury Tuesday night in Phoenix, first responders said.

Four employees and one customer were inside a Carl’s Jr. near Bell and Cave Creek roads when the fire broke out around 9 p.m., the Phoenix Fire Department said.

Crews found the group outside when they reached the site. Flames were eating up the interior and shooting through the roof and heavy smoke was spilling from the restaurant.

Fire got into an attic space “and started to weaken the structural integrity of the building,” a department spokesman said.

More than 75 firefighters eventually got the second-alarm blaze under control and were mopping up hotspots shortly before 2:30 a.m.

Cause of the fire is under investigation.
