4th of July week could bring record-breaking temperatures to Phoenix

PHOENIX — It was expected to be hot in the Phoenix area for the Fourth of July holiday, but the temperatures will continue to rise even after all of the fireworks have gone off.

The Valley saw a high temperatures of 107 degrees Fahrenheit on Wednesday with high 90s expected during firework shows.

The hottest recorded temperature in Phoenix so far this year has been 111 degrees — which could be topped by the end of the week.

An Excessive Heat Watch will be in effect from Thursday morning to Friday evening for most of the Valley.

Larry Hopper with the National Weather Service said the watch means that high temperatures will range between 110 and 115 degrees.

“We are going to get a significant temperature increase here for Thursday and Friday, with temperatures increasing well above 110 (degrees) and approaching 115 (degrees) in many locations,” he told KTAR News 92.3 FM. 

But there is some good news, he added: “Thunderstorm chances begin to go up by the weekend, early next week, and possibly pushing monsoonal moisture that may stick around for more than a day or two.”
