3 seriously injured in car accident that closes State Route 143 in Tempe

At least three people were seriously injured in a car accident in Tempe that closed access to a freeway for hours early Monday.

PHOENIX – At least three people were seriously injured in a car accident in Tempe that closed access to a freeway for hours early Monday.

Police said a passenger vehicle and a dairy truck crashed near 48th Street and Broadway Road around 1 a.m. Authorities shut down northbound 48th Street, which becomes State Route 143 around Interstate 10.

Three people in the passenger vehicle were taken to a hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries, Tempe Officer Allyson Roy told KTAR News 92.3 FM in an email.

The road reopened around 8 a.m.

Tempe firefighters were cleaning diesel fuel from the roadway.

There was no estimated time for reopening.
