3 killed after train crashes into vehicles in northern Arizona

PHOENIX – The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office said three people were killed Easter Sunday after a train smashed into two vehicles near Kingman in northwestern Arizona.

Authorities responded to the accident in Golden Valley, located about 11 miles west of Kingman and about 100 miles away from Las Vegas, according to a social media post.

An investigation found that the two vehicles that were hit were stopped at a railroad crossing waiting for an eastbound train to pass.

After that train passed, the vehicles began to cross the intersection but did not see a westbound train approaching, authorities said.

Kingman’s Larry Whatley, 72, and Virginia Voyles, 49, and Wesley Hoagland, 54, both of Golden Valley, were killed, the sheriff’s office said Tuesday.

Whatley was alone in a jeep and Voyles and Hoagland were in a truck together.

The investigation is ongoing.
