2nd ASU student in 3 months found dead of apparent overdose on campus

PHOENIX — A second student has died of an apparent overdose on Arizona State University’s Tempe campus in the past three months.

ASU police said officers responded to a call in the Sonora Center residential hall on Sunday at 10 p.m. and found a student dead.

The student was identified as 19-year-old freshman Michael Terra, according to ABC15.

Police said foul play was not suspected and preliminary indications led them to believe the death was due to an overdose.

Another student, Ivan Aguirre, had been found dead at a Greek Leadership Village housing unit in November.

Police said a medical examiner’s report released Tuesday indicated Aguirre’s death was due to an overdose.

“Drug and substance abuse is a societal challenge that sadly we are not immune from at the university,” a university spokesperson said in a statement to KTAR News 92.3 FM on Wednesday.

“ASU has ongoing efforts to educate students about the dangers of drug and substance abuse. We are devoted to prevention and education strategies while making resources readily available to those who are affected by drugs or alcohol.”
