2 teen boys struck by lightning at Phoenix-area park

PHOENIX — Two 13-year-old boys were struck by lightning at a park in a northwest Phoenix suburb Wednesday night, as a round of storms made their way through the Valley.

The El Mirage Police Department said in a Facebook post that the boys were injured while at a park near Flores Street and Moreno Boulevard.

One of the boys suffered cardiac arrest — bystanders were administering CPR when police arrived, Sgt. Robert Peoples told KTAR News 92.3 FM early Thursday.

An officer took over the lifesaving procedure until medical first responders reached the site.

Both boys were taken to Phoenix Children’s Hospital, one in critical condition, the other alert and talking.

The more seriously injured boy remained in critical condition and had been moved to intensive care.

Update – Per El Mirage Fire Captain Rivera – one young man is in critical, but stable condition. The other young man is in stable condition.

None of the other children in the park were hurt.

“When the storm starts coming in and there’s lightning in the air, just take cover,” Peoples said.
