PHOENIX — Two people were seriously injured Monday when a wrong-way driver smashed into another car on Interstate 17 in Phoenix.
The accident closed northbound lanes at Bell Road for several hours.
A spokesman for the Arizona Department of Public Safety said it started getting calls of a wrong-way driver shortly after midnight.
Just minutes later a 37-year-old woman driving her SUV southbound in the northbound lanes collided with another SUV driven by an 18-year-old man just north of Greenway Road.
Both drivers were taken to a hospital.
The wrong-way driver could face aggravated assault charges.
Lanes reopened around 5 a.m.
KTAR’s Jim Cross and the Associated Press contributed to this report.
