2 from Phoenix area killed in small plane crash outside of Flagstaff

PHOENIX – Two men from metro Phoenix were killed when a small plane crashed in northern Arizona, authorities said Monday.

The Navajo County Sheriff’s Office said Monday that William Whittington, 70 of Scottsdale, and Stephen Kirkby, 48, of Cave Creek, died in the crash.

The plane went down Friday near the junction of Interstate 40 and State Route 87, close to Winslow, about 55 miles southeast of Flagstaff.

Authorities said the plane was burning when they reached the site and that the two people inside were dead.

No information has been released on possible cause of the crash, which is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration.
