16-year-old boy celebrates end of cancer treatment year after diagnosis

PHOENIX — A year after he was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, 16-year-old Kannon Riecks was able to celebrate in the best way possible.

Riecks ended his cancer treatment on Thursday at Cardon Children’s Medical Center in Mesa and threw a party with his family, friends and doctors to celebrate.

The Maricopa boy even rang a gong and did a cartwheel to signify the end of his treatment.

Ewing’s sarcoma is a rare type of cancer that forms in bones or soft tissue around the bones and is most common among children and young adults.

About 70 percent of children diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma are cured.

Riecks says his biggest passion is sports, and enjoys playing soccer, football and volleyball.
