PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation has been awarded a $15 million grant to construct a highway overpass in Maricopa to separate automobile traffic from Union Pacific railroad tracks.

Maricopa officials have long made separation of State Route 347 vehicle traffic and train traffic a priority. In a release, U.S. Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, D-Ariz., said the project was a major breakthrough.

“This is the fastest growing area of Arizona, and the current grade crossing is affecting congestion, school bus routes and overall public safety,” she said.

Kirkpatrick is a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

The project has an estimated cost of about $54 million.
