1 person reportedly dead after Phoenix-bound plane crashes in California

PHOENIX – One person reportedly was killed Friday morning when a small plane bound for Phoenix crashed shortly after takeoff in Southern California, authorities said.

The four-seat Mooney M20 aircraft hit a building and crashed into a field in Oxnard after departing from the Camarillo Airport around 8 a.m., according to the Ventura County Fire Department.

The crash sparked a fire in a strawberry field just north of U.S. Highway 101, a few miles west of the airport, fire officials said. Camarillo is a city directly east of Oxnard in Ventura County.

Firefighters found debris from the plane on the roof of a building south of the freeway.

According to the Ventura County Star, a fire department spokesman confirmed that one person was aboard the plane and didn’t survive.

The newspaper said the plane was registered in Arizona and was heading to Deer Valley Airport in Phoenix.

No other details were immediately available.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.

CORRECTION: Earlier versions of this story, based on preliminary information provided by the FAA, incorrectly said the plane had departed from Phoenix. It had just taken off in Camarillo when it crashed and was heading to Phoenix.
