1 person dead after semi-truck slams into Mesa home on New Year’s Eve

PHOENIX — A man is dead after a semi-truck slammed into a Mesa home on New Year’s Eve, according to authorities.

The incident occurred around 7 p.m. near Crismon Road and the U.S. 60.

Authorities believe the semi-truck was traveling eastbound on the U.S. 60 and was exiting on the Crimson Road off-ramp when it failed to stop and continued through the intersection and into the house.

There were 10 people in the house when the semi-truck crashed into it with one of the residents, 50-year-old Todd Welliver, being pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital, according to authorities.

The driver of the semi-truck was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

No other people in the home are believed to have life-threatening injuries, according to authorities.

The investigation is ongoing and although impairment has not been ruled out, no charges have been filed at this time.

Authorities say the preliminary investigation suggests the driver may have had a medical emergency prior to the collision.
