West Valley hospital celebrates new wing, a major milestone in $35M expansion project

PHOENIX – Banner Estrella Medical Center celebrated a major expansion milestone last week when the West Valley hospital opened a new wing.

Banner Health, Arizona’s largest hospital system, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday at the campus near 93rd Avenue and Thomas Road in west Phoenix.

Officials from the nearby West Valley suburbs of Tolleson, Avondale and Buckeye took part in the event.

West Valley hospital expansion project includes new beds, suites

The new wing adds 36 inpatient beds on the fifth floor of the medical center. The hospital also opened a new operating room suite earlier in the week as part of its $35 million expansion project.

“Reaching these milestones represents a significant step in expanding access to comprehensive health care services in our community,” Courtney Ophaug, CEO of Banner Estrella Medical Center, said in a press release Monday. “When we complete this project, we’ll have added hospital beds, surgical suites and obstetric suites that will make it easier for our community to receive excellent, timely care close to home.”

When will Banner Estrella Medical Center expansion be finished?

The expansion work started in November 2024 and is scheduled to be completed in spring of next year. It is expected to create 100 new health care jobs.

“The West Valley is growing rapidly, and with that growth comes a greater need for access, quality, and compassionate care,” Wendi Sears, the facility’s chief nursing officer, said in the release. “This expansion not only enhances our ability to care for our community but reinforces our mission: to make health care easier, so life can be better.”
