Bird flu detected in poultry at Arizona farm

PHOENIX — Bird flu was recently detected in poultry at a farm in Arizona, officials announced Tuesday.

The risk to the public remains low, according to the Arizona Department of Agriculture (AZDA). People that were in close contact with the birds are the most at risk.

Samples were sent to the Arizona Veterinary Diagnostic Lab after birds showed signs consistent with bird flu on May 21. The samples were then submitted to the National Veterinary Services Laboratory for confirmation.

No eggs at risk of bird flu have entered the food supply and there have been no signs of human illness, according to the AZDA.

However, the farm located in Maricopa County was placed under quarantine. Sanitation efforts are underway to ensure bird flu risks have been eliminated.

Has bird flu been detected in Arizona this year?

In February, bird flu was detected in milk produced by an Arizona dairy herd.

Risk to the public was low, however, the site, which was also in Maricopa County, was placed under quarantine.
