Jimmy McCain, youngest son of John McCain, appointed to Arizona Board of Regents

PHOENIX – Gov. Katie Hobbs appointed Jimmy McCain, the youngest son of late Sen. John McCain, to the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) on Monday.

The military veteran and businessman will represent northern Arizona as a member of the governing body for the state’s three public universities.

“His long track record of public service and knowledge of the unique challenges and opportunities of northern Arizona make him well positioned to advocate for the students of the region,” Hobbs said in a press release. “With his deep Arizona roots and passion for serving the people of our state, I know he will be a tireless advocate for northern Arizona.”

ABOR is a 12-member panel that provides policy guidance for Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University and the University of Arizona. Regent terms last eight years.

What experience does Jimmy McCain bring to ABOR?

A resident of Cornville, a suburban community near Sedona, McCain currently serves as an intelligence officer in the Arizona National Guard and as the director of government affairs with Hensley Beverage Company.

He also sits on the boards of the Phoenix Committee on Foreign Relations, Arizona Lodging and Tourism Association and Hensley Beverage Company.

“As the regent representing northern Arizona, I am excited to help strengthen higher education across our state and ensure that students from every background, especially those in our Tribal and rural communities, have access to the educational tools they need to succeed,” McCain said in the release.

In between four enlistments with the Marines and Army National Guard, McCain earned a bachelor’s degree from ASU, a master’s degree from Trinity College Dublin and a second master’s degree from ASU.

“Mr. McCain brings a deep understanding of Arizona’s values and a strong record of public service to our nation,” ABOR Chair Doug Goodyear said in a statement. “We look forward to working together to advance student success, uphold accountability and ensure our public universities remain accessible and responsive to the needs of Arizona’s communities.”
