PHOENIX — Arizona State University reached a major milestone with $1 billion for research funding recorded in fiscal year 2024.

The accomplishment places ASU at 37th nationwide among all research institutions and 21st for public universities, according to the National Science Foundation Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) Survey.

Alongside the national research institution ranking, ASU placed at No. 1 nationwide for non-science and engineering expenditures, No. 1 for anthropology research expenditures and No. 2 for education research expenditures.

ASU’s annual research funding has more than doubled over the last decade to reach 10 digits for the first time.

“Surpassing $1 billion in research expenditures underscores our unwavering commitment to be a new gold standard of service to the community, our state and our nation,” ASU President Michael Crow said in a press release.

Examples of ASU’s $1 billion in annual research funding

Some major research projects that helped contribute to the fiscal milestone:

ASU researchers are creating an artificial intelligence tool that works to identify how people’s bodies react to cancer treatments, allowing for more personalized and effective treatment plans.

A research team is creating fishing gear that deters protected species from entering capture nets in the open ocean, finding nets equipped with green LED lights cut down on turtle and non‑target captures by 63% in Mexico and North Carolina.

Another ongoing project is a COCHON chip that connects satellites in Earth’s orbit, working to communicate with other satellites in the atmosphere across more frequencies. It also will continue to work with satellite technology advances.

An ASU team also is working with geographical data in the state to help identify areas that need additional assistance, such as finding a neighborhood with heat-related deaths in Mesa due to utility access.
