PHOENIX – Arizona State University is one of 60 schools federal authorities are monitoring for allegedly failing to protect Jewish students from antisemitism on campus.
The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights warned ASU and the other universities they could face enforcement actions for allowing violations under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act.
“The department is deeply disappointed that Jewish students studying on elite U.S. campuses continue to fear for their safety amid the relentless antisemitic eruptions that have severely disrupted campus life for more than a year. University leaders must do better,” Education Secretary Linda McMahon said in a press release Monday.
On Friday, the chief of the Office for Civil Rights sent a memo announcing antisemitism cases are now the top priority, taking aim at colleges where pro-Palestinian protests led to accusations of harassment and discrimination against Jewish students.
That followed a decision to cut $400 million in federal money for Columbia University, where on Saturday immigration officials arrested a Palestinian activist who was involved in leading student protests.
Directed investigations have been launched into five of the schools:
- Columbia University
- Northwestern University
- Portland State University
- University of California, Berkeley
- University of Minnesota, Twin Cities
Why did U.S. Department of Education warn ASU about antisemitism?
Fifty-five other universities, including ASU, are under investigation or monitoring in response to complaints. The Department of Education didn’t provide details about the complaints against those schools.
ASU had one major incident involving pro-Palestine demonstrators last spring, when dozens of people were arrested for trespassing.
Authorities broke up the April 26-27 protest after midnight for violations of campus rules regarding encampments, overnight presence, creating a disturbance and failing to reserve the space.
Only 20 of those arrested were ASU students, according to the school.

If i were religious i would be Jewish. I like how they role. However, criticizing the Isreali government is not antisemitism. That is ridiculous.

This "activist" was Mahmoud Khalil and they were more than protest.
Khalil was a leader and spokesperson for the violent demonstrations and occupations that took place on Columbia's campus. Students and activists occupied the quad, administration buildings, and as recently as January, disrupted classes to distribute anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian pamphlets. Last week, a Barnard College library was occupied and the NYPD was called in to clear the building.
