Safeway holding grand opening celebration for new Queen Creek grocery store

A new Safeway grocery store is opening in Queen Creek on Friday. Freebies will be given away at the grand opening celebration.

PHOENIX — A new Safeway grocery store is opening in Queen Creek on Friday.

The store, located at 22983 E. Riggs Road, will open at 6 a.m., with a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for 9 a.m.

Queen Creek Mayor Julia Wheatley, who recently resumed her duties after going on leave, is expected to attend the event along with several community leaders.

The grand opening will include Safeway Foundation check presentations totaling more than $100,000 in grants to local schools and nonprofits. This includes a $36,500 grant to St. Vincent de Paul Society and a $25,000 grant to the Queen Creek Schools Education Foundation.

Freebies in store for guests at grand opening of Queen Creek Safeway

Attendees will be able to sample Safeway food, and following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the first 200 shoppers will receive free bags of groceries.

Craig Eisenberg of Eisenberg Company, a Phoenix-based commercial real estate firm, said the store will help meet the needs of the rapidly growing community.

“The store, located in the Harvest Station plaza at the southwest corner of Riggs and Gary roads, is the heartbeat of this ruggedly beautiful and desirable East Valley town,” Eisenberg said in a Wednesday announcement. “Home to specialty shopping, this beautifully designed Safeway adds to the overall upscale experience that many will enjoy for years to come.”

The new store features a full-service pharmacy, DriveUp & Go, grocery pickup, an expanded Starbucks with seating, a floral department and a produce department offering a wide selection of fruits and vegetables.

Shoppers will also find an extensive meat department with poultry and seafood, as well as a wine and craft beer selection, a full-service sushi counter, a bakery, deli and cheese departments.
