Several projects were recently denied in unincorporated Pinal County, just as a 954-acre data center campus was just approved in the city of Casa Grande.

It’s getting a bit dicey for developers seeking approvals for new data centers and energy generation projects in unincorporated Pinal County. In some cities within the county, however, it’s a different story.

Last week the county’s Planning and Zoning Commission again voted to deny a gas-fired power plant with battery energy storage systems – even after the applicant proposed reducing its capacity from 500 to 250 megawatts.

And in August the board rejected what was planned to be the largest data center campus in the state – Vermaland’s La Osa Energy Center – even after the developer proposed shrinking its size from up to 59 data center buildings to just 11.

But some individual cities within the large rural county just south of the Phoenix metro appear more open to the projects.
