AMC greenlights ‘Walking Dead’ companion series

AMC has officially been taken over by zombies.

The network — home to the ratings-smashing “The Walking Dead” — has officially ordered a pilot for a companion series to the hit show, Entertainment Weekly reported.

Unlike “Better Call Saul,” which sprung from the channel’s “Breaking Bad,” the show is not considered a “spin-off,” because the show will feature an entirely new set of characters and in an entirely different location.

“Almost from the beginning of The Walking Dead on AMC, fans have been curious about what is going on in the zombie apocalypse in other parts of the world,” said AMC President Charlie Collier. “In fact, beyond requests for zombie cameos, it’s the question I get asked the most.”

The executive producers of “The Walking Dead” are all on board, as well as Dave Erickson, the showrunner from “Sons of Anarchy.”

The fifth season of “The Walking Dead” starts Oct. 12.
