91-year-old woman held at gunpoint during home burglary

A 91-year-old woman is safe after two men held her at gunpoint following a robbery inside of her home early Sunday morning.

According to Phoenix Police spokesperson James Holmes, police were called to the area of the 4000 block of West Myrtle Avenue in response to a burglary.

Police said a 91-year-old woman was living alone inside the residence when she was awoken by a disturbance. Homes said she didn’t try to do anything and let the suspects do what they wanted then dialed 911 and gave a detailed description of what had happened.

Police said the suspects took off in her 2006 Honda Civic and because her quick thinking in dialing 911, police were able to locate the vehicle right away and arrest the suspects. Holmes added that all of the woman’s property was recovered.

“This had to be pretty extreme for this elderly citizen but she kept her head about her,” Holmes said. “The officers that were out there with her and the detectives said that she’s pretty sharp for a 91-year-old. She did everything she could to protect herself, she was not concerned about the property and she did the right thing.”

Police said the suspects gained entry into the residence through a doggy door where they took money and property and ransacked the home.

“It’s something that a lot of folks don’t think about, especially if you have larger pets,” Homes said of locking the doggy door. “But you have to consider that you have a latch on that door when its not being used, just to make sure things like this can’t happen.”

Police have not identified the suspects yet, but said they were in their 20’s and were expected to be booked into jail on suspicion of burglary and vehicle theft.
