Scottsdale saw increased golf revenue, rounds played in 2014

The golf industry has taken a hit over the last decade or so, but Scottsdale, Arizona, didn’t feel the slide last year, at least.

According to the Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau, golf courses in the city were busier in 2014 than they were a year prior.

The Phoenix Business Journal reports golf-related revenues were up 5 percent from the year before, while the average number of rounds increased 4.8 percent.

Increased play drove 2014’s improved revenue numbers, but toward the end of the year, both median and average rate per round increased. Scottsdale tourism officials see this as a positive sign.

Golf actually slowed down in the city near the end of the year, as the number of rounds played fell slightly in the fourth quarter of 2014 compared to the same span of the year before. Despite that fact, revenue for most golf-related activities was up 7.6 percent from the fourth quarter of 2013.

Nationally the golf market has been flat, so even slight increases is seen as a good news for the Scottsdale golf market.

As far as individual courses go, Talking Stick in east Scottsdale was named this week by USA Today as one of the 10 best golf resorts for a group getaway in the country. Last year, the Pinnacle and Monument courses of Troon North Golf Club were both ranked in the top 100 of Golf.com’s list of the best courses in the U.S. The Boulders Club’s South course also made cut, as did four courses elsewhere in the metro Phoenix region.
