Phoenix-area fire departments, rescue crews brace for influx of hikers
A Valley fire department official said crews were preparing for calls from stranded or injured hikers.
PHOENIX — The great January weather has more Valley hikers hitting the trails and now thousands of visitors are on the way for the Pro Bowl, Super Bowl and Waste Management Phoenix Open.
Division Chief Jay Ducote with Scottsdale Fire said the concern is high with inexperienced hikers taking on more than they can handle.
“Remember to hike with a buddy. Begin hydrating the day before your hike. Have enough water for yourself and any pets you bring on the hike and carry a charged cell phone.”
And wear sensible shoes. He said out-of-towners have been known to
hike in flip-flops or sandals.
“Wear hiking boots and bring a hat and sunglasses.”
Ducote said mountain rescues weren’t unusual at this time of year. Thousands of people from across the nation who are unaware of the hiking challenges.
“Don’t let our 70-80 degree temperatures fool you. Many of the emergency calls we receive this time of year through spring training are heat-related illness.
“We do not recommend an active hike the day after a long night of celebrating.”
Finally, Ducote said hikers should tell friends where and when they are going on a hike and give an expected return time. Also, hikers should know their your location and the closest trailhead.
