Police: ‘Kidnapping’ in Mesa was people messing around

Nov 17, 2014, 5:16 PM | Updated: 5:17 pm

MESA, Ariz. — A supposed weekend kidnapping case in Mesa turned out to be nothing more than people messing around, police said Monday.

Three of the people in a video shared with media came forward and said they were picking up a friend. It was mistaken as a kidnapping.

The video showed the incident happened at around 1 a.m. in the parking lot of a Circle K near Southern Avenue and Horne. The supposed victim appeared to be talking on his phone prior to the incident.

His friends then entered the parking lot from the east in a vehicle with its lights off. Police said four people got out of the vehicle, then forcibly put their friend in the back of the vehicle.

The people involved all apologized to police and declined interviews.

We want to hear from you.
