PHOENIX — Downtown Phoenix will soon see even more students as the University of Arizona broke ground on another major medical research center there on Thursday.

The new Biosciences Partnership Building will be the latest in a number of new university buildings in downtown and the fourth building in the Phoenix Biomedical Campus of Arizona.

Arizona President Ann Weaver Hart said the new building will be a center of medical research in several different fields, from traumatic brain injury to cancer.

“The research conducted by our universities carries multiple benefits, not just the creation of critical basic knowledge in research,” she said. “It’s a foundation for the major advances and initiatives in our health.”

Hart said healthcare is a growing field and the research conducted at centers like the Biosciences Partnership Building is vital to the future of health and medical care.

“The health science (and) healthcare workforce going into the future will be more and more important as our population ages and as we work hard to improve and expand the support and coverage that we have for all of our citizens to preserve and promote their health,” she said.

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton said the new facility will not only help bring care and research to the downtown Phoenix area, but will help create about 360 permanent jobs in the city.

“Campuses like this are critical for our ability to compete in today’s innovation-based economy,” he said.

The 10-story, 245,000-square-foot building will take about 26 months to complete and will be located at 435 N. Fifth Street.
