After being arrested in Scottsdale earlier in the month, former Phoenix Suns guard Rex Chapman has reportedly began a substance-abuse treatment program in Louisville, Kentucky.
Louisville television station WDRB reports Chapman began the program at The Brook Hospital on Monday. The former Suns player played his college ball for the University of Kentucky, which is based in Lexington — a little more than an hour’s drive from Louisville.
Chapman, who will be 47 Sunday, is determined to break a reliance on suboxone, a medication prescribed to help patients stop using opioid-based pain medication.
Chapman suffered multiple knee, ankle and thumb injuries over his 12-season, 666-game NBA career. He never played an entire 82-game schedule and retired from the Phoenix Suns, his fourth pro team, in 2000.
The ex-Wildcats standout was stopped in his car by Scottsdale police on the afternoon of Sept. 19. He is accused of stealing from an Apple Store in the city on multiple occasions.
Police said they suspect Chapman took the stolen items to a local pawn shop and sold them for cash.
Seven incidents of theft have been reported to Scottsdale police. The total estimated loss is more than $14,000.
Chapman is facing nine counts of organized retail theft and five counts of trafficking in stolen property — all felonies.
He was taken to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office 4th Avenue Jail in Phoenix on the weekend of his arrest, and he later was released on a $14,000 bond.
According to Basketball-Reference.com, Chapman earned more than $22 million over the course of his 12-year NBA career.
