1 dead, 2 seriously injured in crash on Loop 101

TEMPE, Ariz. — A woman was killed and an Arizona highway patrol officer injured Wednesday morning in a wreck on a Valley freeway.

The Department of Public Safety said a woman from the Tucson area struck the officer’s patrol vehicle on Loop 101 near Loop 202. The crash killed the driver and seriously injured the officer and a civilian observer in the patrol car.

DPS Officer Carrick Cook said commuters began calling in about an erratic driver on Loop 202 around 3 a.m. The driver eventually turned south onto Loop 101, where she slammed into the cruiser. The officer’s car was parked well off to the side of the freeway.

An investigation was underway.

The Loop 101 southbound at Loop 202 was reopened about 9:30 a.m.
