Back at it: Gov. Doug Ducey overturns anti-geocaching law in Arizona

PHOENIX — Geocachers, gear up: You’re now allowed to resume your hobby in Arizona.

Gov. Doug Ducey overturned a ban on geocaching on state trust land Monday. The ban had been in place for two years.

However, there is a catch: Anyone looking to geocache on state trust land will have to obtain a $15 permit.

Geocaching is a form of treasure and scavenger hunting in state parks where GPS-enabled devices like smartphones, along with compasses and clues, are used to find coordinates and locate hidden objects.

Geocachers had argued that they are stewards of the land because they picked up litter and helped maintain the parks while looking for the hidden items.
