PHOENIX — Assuming they win their primaries, Sen. John McCain and Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick would be locked in a dead heat for one of Arizona’s U.S. Senate seats, a poll said.

The Rocky Mountain Poll said McCain’s lead over Kirkpatrick in a hypothetical November general election is just one percentage point, down five points from his November lead.

But it’s only January and both McCain and Kirkpatrick still have a primary to win before they appear on November’s ballot.

The poll said Kirkpatrick is testing well with Hispanic, rural and young voters. It also said about 1-in-5 Republican voters will jump the aisle to support her and 40 percent of independents will support her.

Kirkpatrick’s biggest lead is in rural Arizona counties, while McCain holds at least a 10-point advantage in both Maricopa and Pima counties, the two most populous counties in the state.

There is still time for each candidate to take a lead, however, given that 26 percent of Democrats, 19 percent of Republicans and 30 percent of Independents have not selected a candidate.

McCain is still polling incredibly well among members of his own party. Nearly 50 percent of those polled said they would vote for the incumbent, with just 11 percent saying they would go for state Sen. Kelli Ward.

We want to hear from you.
