PHOENIX — The family of a Phoenix-area man who was shot to death by police filed a $10 million wrongful death claim this week.

Troy Hendrickson, who filed the claim on behalf of 47-year-old Ivan Krstic’s family on Monday, said Mesa police overreacted when Krstic was using a pipe to check his property for leaks on Dec. 3, 2015. Officers said Krstic was acting threatening with the pipe and tased him before fatally shooting him.

“The shooting was not justified,” Krstic’s attorney, Troy Hendrickson, said. “Frankly, based on the witness statements, it looks like a murder to me.”

Hendrickson said officers, who responded to a call from a concerned citizen, told Krstic to drop the pipe, which he did. After Krstic was tased, officer said he got back on his feet and turned toward them with pipe. He was then shot.

Hendrickson said Krstic is survived by a wife and two children.
