PHOENIX — The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office and ridesharing service Uber will extend their joint anti-drinking-and-driving campaign that offered discounted rides for first-time users around the Valley, according to a recent press release.

In an ongoing effort to reduce the number of drunk driving-related accidents in the Phoenix area, the attorney’s office and Uber began their “Save Lives, Don’t DUI” campaign on Dec. 11 and, due to its success, decided to extend the offer until Feb. 8.

The campaign gives first-time Uber users $20 off of their first ride with the promotional code “FREETRIP” and donated $5 to the Arizona chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving with every new user. During the initial run of the campaign, 403 new users and 427 existing users applied the code, donating $1,200 to the organization.

Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery said the campaign comes at a perfect time for the Valley, which will be hosting several popular sporting events such as the College Football Championship and the Arizona Cardinals playoff game in the upcoming month.

“We were very pleased to see so many people take advantage of this safe and affordable transportation alternative during the holiday season,” he said in a press release. “By extending this successful campaign with Uber we hope to continue to encourage people to make the smart choice not to drink and drive.”

General Manager of Uber Arizona Steve Thompson said the ridesharing service is looking forward to keeping Valley streets safer while “providing residents and visitors with safe rides during marquee events” throughout Arizona.

New users who download the app can use the promotion code “FREETRIP” to receive a $20 credit and existing users can use “WMOWIN” to be entered into a contest to win two tickets to the Waste Management Phoenix Open golf tournament during the first week in February.
